TEDx - Why Career Ownership is The Future of Work

It's time we see work as an evolutionary process... because all the evidence shows that it is.

Welcome to The Shift, a weekly newsletter where I provide thought-provoking ideas to help you think differently about your career and money.

Last Week + This Week = It’s All Connected

Last week I was at the beach, but the week before I wrote about how hard it is to find a job. Read here if you missed it.

This week I get to reveal my TEDx Talk!! (link at bottom)

Finally LIVE!!

I still have to pinch myself… I officially have a TEDx Talk under my belt!

The positive feedback has been energizing. The best part is that the themes I hoped people would walk away with after watching it, are the ones they say resonated the most.

Some of those themes (in the form of quotes from the talk) are:

  • “It’s an evolution, not a revolution.”

  • “A career is not something we find. It is something we create.”

  • “People are choosing to work differently.”

  • “We’ve been given permission to dream of new paths to success.”

My Goal

My goal with the talk was to plant a seed.

A seed that would force people to open their minds and consider new ways of working. I wanted to get the wheels turning with the idea that there are endless possibilities of how we can work.

I gave real-life examples of some of the new ways to work, but I also provided a comparison of what work looked like just 10 years ago, versus today.

That set the stage for the realization:

  • Work has already changed.

  • And the engine of change is just getting started.

I believe it’s time we see work as an evolutionary process… because all the evidence shows that it is! We just haven’t acknowledged it.

The coolest part is that this evolution is creating an opportunity to take ownership of our careers.

The Perfect Storm for Career Ownership

We are at a unique point in time - where pivotal change is happening. Our own preferences about work have changed. Corporate structures and needs have changed. The environment has changed.

I closed the TEDx with the visual below that my new friend Hannah Wilson created (follow her on Instagram @QuotedVisually for more of her amazing work!).

It brings to life the idea that work is an evolution...

I explain:

We’ve been given the permission to dream of new paths to success.

We don’t have to stay on the stagnant staircase on the left.

Gig work, freelancing, contract work, and side hustles have provided a gateway.

Or a doorway to see new possibilities.

Imagine if there was nothing holding you back from creating your dream work situation.

What would the door on the right look like if you had a blank slate and the power of the pen?

One Request! 🙏

I would be grateful if you would watch the video, like, comment and SHARE it with anyone you think would benefit from it.

Let’s make The Shift!
