The Shift's 1st Birthday: Seeing Is Believing

Celebrating the best editions after one year of writing The Shift.

Welcome to The Shift, a weekly newsletter where I provide thought-provoking ideas to help you think differently about your career and money.

Last Week + This Week = It’s All Connected1

Last week I gave another example of a big, public company embracing the future of work. Read here if you missed it.

This week I look back on ONE WHOLE YEAR of writing The Shift. 🥳

News for humans, by humans.

  • Today's news.

  • Edited to be unbiased as humanly possible.

  • Every morning, we triple-check headlines, stories, and sources for bias.

  • All by hand with no algorithms.

Baby’s 1st Birthday! 🎈

Happy Birthday to The Shift!!

It’s been a fun ride with you in the passenger seat! I’m learning a ton and I hope you are too.

While my approach to this newsletter continues to evolve, my goal remains the same: to open minds and inspire change. I believe work can feel better and be better for many. We (workers, managers, employers, c-suites, boards) can make the change — but only if we are are willing to think outside of the box.

Progress has been made, however…

We’re just getting started!

The Best Of The Year

There’s definitely a trend in the types of topics that resonate with you.

I’m learning that to empower change, you must show the change. Seeing is truly believing.

While you all love my stats proving what you feel - that the way we work is changing rapidly - you really love the examples of people and companies embracing new ways to work.

With no further ado, the top 5 editions of 2024 are:

  1. A New Movement: Not A Midlife Crisis

This isn’t the first time Americans have a burning desire for career change (Boomers know what I mean). However, this time could be different. Long-term trends suggest this movement has staying power.

  2. If Layoffs Are Like The 90s…

The job market of today resembles the 90s in a lot of ways. There was job loss, but also opportunity for those with an open mind. Plus, I dug into the unusual unfolding of the 90s job recovery.

  3. Far-Fetched Or Not?

A “future of work” where employers and employees work seamlessly (and happily) to meet each other’s needs may sound like a sci-fi novel. It’s actually reality at a company with $65 billion in sales.

  4. What is Fractional Work??

I was not the only one who didn’t know what this new type of work was. So I decided to dig into what the heck it is (and isn’t), the pros and cons, and I included my take to what it means for the future.

  5. Embracing Change - An Unlikely Example

Changing the status quo is never easy, but Indra Nooyi, former CEO of PepsiCo, did it with determination and grace. Even as she faced fierce opposition in shifting Pepsi to become more health conscious.
